Eritrea, Asmara, 1994. A Ernesto Breda engine dating from 1929 stays idle in the railway shed. The only railway track, between Asmara and the port of Massawa, was destroyed during the independence war with Ethiopia.

Mozambique, Inhambane. 1998. Railway workers in front of a Porter no. 572 steam locomotive (transferred during the early 1970s to Inhambane). Although the railway line is out of order, the locomotives are still being maintained.

Mozambique, Sofala Province, Inhaminga. 1995. An abandoned rare G-class locomotive nº. 60 that once served on the TZR, the Trans Zambezia Railway. The G-class was also the last steam locomotive built by North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, Scotland.

Mozambique, Sofala province, Inhaminga. 1994. A woman washes clothes in the pit of the National Railways of Mozambique (CFM) former workshop in Inhaminga. This workshop used to do the maintenance for the Beira-Tete railway that was destroyed during the civil war between RENAMO and the government (1976-1992). Repair is currently underway (2010).

Mozambique, Sofala province, Savane, 1994. Trees grow on the once busy and important railway line between Beira and Tete. This track was destroyed during the civil war (1976-1992) between RENAMO rebels and the government. Repair is currently underway (started in 2010).
